What We're About
"You hold small group in a Bar!"
This is what I usually get when I tell church people where the Crossroads C20s group meets weekly. Yes, even some of you might be thinking it, so I’ll be the first to admit it: we meet in a bar. Well, actually, we meet in a “pub,” but that’s just a detail. Crossroads C20s started meeting at Clodfelter’s Pub last September for a couple of reasons. One, because it’s closer to campus than the Crossroads building.
Two, in my experience as a college student and in working with them, they are spiritually thirsty people who would never darken the door of a “church” but don’t mind warming a stool in a pub. Simple put, I don’t have any problem swallowing my church pride if it means making people comfortable talking about Jesus. Some of the best conversations I ever had about Jesus were in a bar with people who weren’t “Church” people and who didn’t make it regularly on Sunday’s to a church service. It made me realize that the spiritual thirsty don’t always end up at church, and so sometimes the church needs to come to them.
Which is exactly what we did last September. You see, the church is not a building, but a people of God. Or, at least that’s my take. The church exists because God has a hold of our hearts and each one of has the responsbility to be the church to one another.
That’s what we do on Tuesday nights at Clodfelter’s. The group meets not always to study the word, although we do, or read a book together, which we will be doing this term, but to be the church. To support and pray for each other. To share our lives with each other and to be constantly amazed at the work that Jesus is doing in us and through us.
So there you go. If you’re College or 20 something, join us, even if you’re not sure about this church thing. We want to be a safe place for the spiritual thirsty and we want to invite you to participate in the church like you’ve never done before. Not just go to church, but to become a part of the people of God.
